Fall clean-up is the single most valuable visit on the calendar, and it is also the one most often done badly. A rushed pass in late October leaves half the leaves still to fall, and the mat that forms over the next three weeks is what kills the turf underneath. Here is what a proper clean-up covers on an East End property.

Why one pass is never enough

Oaks on the South Fork hold their leaves late and drop them unevenly, often well into November. A clean-up booked for the third week of October will look immaculate on the day and be buried again two weeks later, which is why we schedule multiple passes rather than a single visit.

Wet leaves matted over turf block light and trap moisture against the crown of the plant. Under snow cover that combination invites snow mold, and the damage does not show until the thaw — at which point you are reseeding in April instead of enjoying a lawn that came through the winter intact.

What a full clean-up actually includes

A complete fall clean-up goes well beyond blowing leaves off the grass. The beds matter as much as the lawn, and the details are what separate a tidy property from one that is genuinely ready for winter.

  • Full leaf clearance from lawn, beds, borders and hardscape
  • Perennials cut back and spent annual growth removed
  • Bed edges re-cut so the line survives the winter
  • Debris cleared from gutter lines, walks, steps and drives
  • Irrigation blown out before the first hard freeze
  • All material hauled off site rather than piled at the property line

The jobs worth doing at the same time

Fall is the right moment for several jobs that get forgotten until they become urgent. Aeration and overseeding land best in early fall, when soil is still warm and weed pressure has dropped away. Structural tree pruning is easier once the leaves are down and the branch architecture is visible.

It is also the last comfortable window to stake driveway edges and mark irrigation heads before snow arrives. Doing it in November takes twenty minutes; doing it after the first storm is guesswork, and guesswork is how heads and pavers get clipped by a plow.

Booking the window

The right week depends on your specific trees and exposure, not on the calendar. A wooded Noyac lot and an open Bridgehampton field will not finish dropping at the same time, so we schedule around what is actually on your property.
